STUBHUB REVEALS THE TOP 10 MUSIC TOURS OF SUMMER 2017

Stubhub’s Third-Annual Summer Tour Preview Reveals U2 Is the Most In-Demand Act; Justin Bieber and Tool Offer the Best Value; and New Festivals Make the Top Five Music Festivals List

San Francisco – (May 15, 2017) – StubHub, the world’s largest ticket marketplace, today released its third-annual preview of the summer concert landscape, breaking down the most in-demand touring acts of summer 2017. U2 unseats last year’s leader, Adele, by taking the #1 spot on the list, which heavily features legacy rock artists for the third year in a row. Top contemporary artists like Ed Sheeran also rank highly, and Kendrick Lamar broke the top 10 list for the first time, only three weeks after his tour was announced.

2017 Top Selling Acts
Based on total sales on StubHub for U.S. dates from Memorial Day to Labor Day

  1. U2
  2. Ed Sheeran
  3. Bruno Mars
  4. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
  5. Lady Gaga
  6. Metallica
  7. Kendrick Lamar
  8. Tool
  9. Justin Bieber
  10. Roger Waters

By the Numbers: Breaking Down the Top 10 List

  • Legacy rock acts have dominated the list for the last three years, demonstrating an ongoing command of the touring landscape throughout the summer
  • #1 U2 outsells #2 Ed Sheeran by 65%, even with fewer than half as many shows in the summer months (13 vs. 32), and exceeds last year’s #1, Adele, by 15%, even with eight fewer dates
  • Looking at average sales per-show, U2 still dominates, outselling the second highest per-show performer (Lady Gaga) by 118%; eight of U2’s dates are the top in-demand of individual events all summer; the June 3 Chicago appearance is the most in-demand concert of the summer
  • The only artist to return to the list from 2016 is Justin Bieber
  • Tool is the most affordable top 10 act to see this summer based on the lowest average ticket prices overall
  • Justin Bieber is a great deal this summer – his tour sold the least expensive ticket of acts in the top 10, and the price of tickets purchased on StubHub this year is down 40% over last summer
  • When tickets for Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. tour went on sale April 28, searches on StubHub quadrupled from the day before and he shot into the top 10 selling summer acts in one week – his position on the list is likely to keep climbing as the summer progresses
  • Roger Waters may be the hardest working on the list this summer with the most tour dates (34) of anyone in the top 10 during the summer months; Ed Sheeran (26 years old) is second with 32 tour dates

Music festivals continue to be a way for an increasing number of fans to see a multitude of acts between independent headlining tours. BottleRock, as a relatively newer festival, has been the fastest growing summer music festival over the past three years (demand has nearly tripled since 2015).  Keeping in line with the trending demand of legacy rock acts, two out of three of the top music festivals this summer are devoted to classic rock acts.

The most in-demand U.S. summer music festivals based on ticket sales on StubHub to date are:

  1. CMA Music Festival (June 8-11 in Nashville, TN)
  2. BottleRock Napa (May 26-28 in Napa, CA)
  3. Lollapalooza (August 3-6 in Chicago, IL)
  4. The Classic East (July 29-30 in Flushing, NY)
  5. The Classic West (July 15-16 in Los Angeles, CA)

The Power of Jeter: May 14 Jersey Retirement Most In-Demand Game of 2017 Season

Derek Jeter’s jersey may have been #2, but his May 14 jersey retirement is the #1 most in-demand game of the 2017 MLB season, according to ticket sales figures on StubHub.

Current and historical data from StubHub demonstrates that Jeter’s star power has endured:

  • To this day, Jeter’s last home game on September 25, 2014 is still StubHub’s best-selling regular season MLB game of all time.
  • In addition, his last home game is the second most in-demand regular season game of all time across all major sports leagues, with Kobe Bryant’s last NBA game at home in Los Angeles taking the top spot.
  • As his legacy and drawing-power endures, the commemorative game on May 14 (Yankees-Astros), for Jeter’s jersey retirement is the most in-demand game of the 2017 MLB season – even ahead of all Opening Day games.
  • Total ticket sales for Jeter’s jersey retirement ceremony are more than triple the total sales for David Ortiz’s Retirement Ceremony on June 23, the second best-selling upcoming MLB game.

StubHub Introduces New Skill for Microsoft Cortana to Make Event Discovery as Easy as Asking for Ideas

StubHub Skill for Cortana Builds on Success of the StubHub Chatbot for Skype and Leverages Entire Microsoft Bot Framework

SAN FRANCISCOMAY 11, 2017StubHub, the world’s largest ticket marketplace, today announced the launch of its new “Skill” for Microsoft Cortana, a voice assistant that helps consumers discover the live events and experiences they want to attend. The StubHub Skill for Cortana is the latest innovation in StubHub’s artificial intelligence (AI) portfolio, which also includes chatbots for Skype and Facebook Messenger.

To use the StubHub Skill, consumers with the Cortana assistant simply ask for live event ideas by saying, “Cortana, ask StubHub to find me something fun to do tonight,” “Cortana, ask StubHub to find baseball tickets next week,” or similar phrases related to live music, sports and theater. The StubHub Skill then takes consumers through a discovery process based on where they are, what they like, and when they are available, to connect them with ideas for live events.

“Think of the StubHub Skill for Cortana like a concierge that suggests what people can do based on their interests and what their friends are doing, in a natural, conversational, one-to-one experience,” said Mats Nilsson, head of product, UX and PMO for StubHub. “We believe the StubHub Skill for Cortana can help consumers get ideas for live events at the moment they’re inspired to go out, with minimal friction in the experience, as easily as talking with their friends.”

In building the StubHub Skill for Cortana, StubHub leveraged the Microsoft Bot Framework, and well as LUIS, Microsoft’s proprietary natural language processing (NLP) AI, and added a layer of inputs from a variety of StubHub sources to create the most conversational experience possible. StubHub engineers analyzed the results of the StubHub chatbot for Skype to understand people’s expectations and how their conversations evolved, and also tapped into a key StubHub differentiator – the face-to-face interactions between StubHub’s Last-Minute Services (LMS) team and their customers – to understand the types of conversations people have in real life about StubHub, and how the StubHub Skill for Cortana could simulate those.

STUBHUB PARTNER WITH NORTHAMPTON SAINTS TO TAKE TICKETING INTO A NEW ERA

Northampton Saints has announced a new partnership with StubHub, which will see the club introduce a new ticketing platform for the 2017/18 season.

Unlike the previous Elite Sponsorship agreement between the club and company, this new partnership sees StubHub become the Saints’ official ticketing partner, and be the outlet for all tickets, whether for the season or individual matches.

Saints and StubHub will be utilising an integration with the Event Ticketing software from SAP – one of the world’s largest software companies – to offer supporters some brand new and unique features, including ticket transferability and the ability to log into online accounts through Facebook.

In response to considerable amounts of feedback and comments during the past year, Season Ticket Holders will once again be able to re-sell their seats or terrace spots for games they cannot attend through StubHub, setting their own price and managing their own account. This facility will also be offered for all supporters for the first time, too, meaning that if – for whatever reason – a supporter cannot attend a match they will be able to re-sell the ticket.

Match tickets for individual game purchasers will be available as downloadable pdfs, on smartphones to scan at the turnstiles, or as traditional paper versions, with purchasers of re-sold tickets also able to receive their ticket via email for the first time, too.

As part of the partnership StubHub branding will appear on all backroom playing staff computers on match days.

“We’re very excited to be partnering up with StubHub once again,” said Saints commercial director Brian Facer. “Comments from our supporters had been that our ticketing website needed to provide a smooth process for booking match tickets and Season Tickets, so we conducted an extensive review of every type of software available on the market.

“The SAP Event Ticketing software used by StubHub is second to none and will give us the flexibility to be fully responsive to all our supporters, whether they have been at Franklin’s Gardens for years as a Season Ticket Holder or are coming to us for the first time.

“StubHub will also give us the ability to reach a larger audience, something which is crucial as we look to expand as a club in the future, turning more people into Saints supporters and underpinning the investment into the playing effort.”

Nick Harford, StubHub UK’s head of business development and partnerships, international, is delighted to be working once again with the Saints.

“We are delighted to partner with Northampton Saints once again, and this time on a broader level where we will provide a new overall ticketing platform, utilising StubHub’s integration with SAP’s Event Ticketing software,” he said. “We look forward to developing our long-term partnership.”

The club will be transitioning to the new ticketing platform over the coming months, with more information about managing online accounts being sent out to Season Ticket Holders ahead of the 2017/18 season.

NHL Playoff Pressure – Not Just For The Players

The following is a post written by Dr. David Greenberg of St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Toronto. Dr. Greenberg is providing tips for fans on how to deal with stress while watching their team during the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs as part of StubHub’s #FansWithHeart campaign. You can follow @StubHubCA on twitter for a chance to win a StubHub branded heart rate monitor.

This year’s NHL playoffs have been a little out of the ordinary for Canadian hockey fans. After 2016, when no Canadian teams managed to qualify for the post-season, this is the first year since 2004 when as many as five Canadian teams made the playoffs. However, while this could (and should) be seen as a source of celebration for the hometown fans, it also provides for a great deal of stress while watching the games, and ultimately disappointment for the fans of all but the one team that takes home Lord Stanley’s Cup.

As we move through the second round, three Canadian teams have already been eliminated, and research commissioned by StubHub confirms that the effects on Canadian hockey fans may have been greater than one might imagine. Thirty-three per cent of Canadians surveyed said that they found just watching the Playoffs stressful, almost as stressful as paying their mortgage for teams in a game seven, and 25% suffered from “Post Elimination Blues”. So, since you’re not going to want to miss a minute of playoff action, how can you help to manage the stress associated with watching and/or deal with the premature end of your team’s season?

Here are a few tips that will keep you healthy and help you to cope:

Exercise is Key

It’s a fact that exercise, in addition to all the other benefits it confers (i.e. burning off the wings and beer), is among the best strategies for managing stress. If you’ve already got a well-established routine try your best to stick with it. If you’ve been thinking about starting, now’s a perfect time. Current recommendations are 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week, that would be walking at a pace that would be as if you were trying to catch a bus.  Go for a walk in-between periods or before/after the game with a fellow fan and you can vent and get your fitness in at the same time.

Sleep is Important

It’s not a huge problem in the first couple of rounds for fans of local teams, and even overtime games that start at 7pm end at a reasonable hour. However, what if you are an Oilers fan who lives in Toronto? Games that don’t even start until after 10pm local time can really take their toll. The problem for most people is that they have a “Hard Start” to their day, that is a time they have to get up to go to work, regardless of what time they get to sleep. Be aware of it when planning the day after a game, and perhaps try to catch up on some sleep on the off nights.

Watch Your Alcohol Intake

I’d be more than happy to have a beer with you watching a game so this isn’t about me being an anchor. However, between 15-20% of the people surveyed said they drink more during the playoffs. Remember that Canadian Safe Drinking Guidelines recommend no more than three drinks for men or two drinks for women in any one sitting. It will also impact your sleep, not to mention the next morning, and for those of you that worry about this, it’s a lot of calories when you can’t burn them off. A good strategy to pace yourself and prevent feeling lousy in the morning is to drink a pint glass of ice water between drinks. It will fill you up, and keep you well hydrated.

I recognize how hard some of these things are to do, and I’m not naïve enough to think that thousands of Canadian hockey fans are going to start adopting a healthier lifestyle in the middle of the playoffs. But please give it some thought, and, anything you can do to adopt any parts of these changes will help. In the meantime, be thankful for the opportunity to watch your team and, win or lose, enjoy every minute of the best hockey of the year.

Yours in Good Health,

Dr. Dave
